Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a person's upper back, with short dark hair and a thin chain necklace visible. Three flower heads, drawn with delicate, fine dark linework and light shading, sit on curving stems that run diagonally from the shoulder blade towards the centre of the back, with two leaves at the lower end. The image is in black and grey against a pale, soft-focus background.

Her neighbour, Edith Coombe, had a plot that ran right up against the wall between their gardens, and Edith's blooms were a shade of bronze you could smell from the lane. Every autumn the two of them went at it over the wall with secateurs and sharp remarks. Nobody could say who started the trouble, though the vicar swore it was a bulb of Edith's that had crept under the wall the spring before.
The year of the Harvest Show, the pair of them came to the hall with their cut stems wrapped in damp newspaper, and both had brought the same three-headed spray. Mrs Pargeter looked at Edith's, and Edith looked at hers, and then the two of them began to laugh so hard the judge came out from the tea urn to see what was wrong. They shared the prize that year, and the next, and every October after, the stems went over the wall in one basket and came back the same way, so nobody could ever tell whose was whose.
