Sketched cat silhouette on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cat in profile sits in a silhouette filled with loose, scratchy black lines, with its tail curling down the arm. The linework is sparse and uneven, leaving gaps of bare skin that give the cat a sketched look. The design is in black ink only and sits against a plain, softly blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The snow had sealed the Haldane Inn for four days, and Mrs Pryce had stopped counting the cups. Tomas came down the back stairs at dusk with a candle in one hand and the cat's bowl in the other, the way his grandmother had taught him, and found the kitchen door open to the yard. Cold came in across the flagstones like a dog that wanted to be let in.

The cat was not in the bowl. It was not by the range or under the settle where it always slept with its tail wrapped round its nose. Tomas followed the prints. They went out across the drifts in a thin, uneven line, as if someone had scratched them there with a nib that kept skipping, and they ended at the wall of the old well house where the snow had blown away from the stones.
The cat sat there in profile, perfectly still, black against the grey brick. Its outline was hatched with loose strokes, some long, some broken off, so that the wall showed through in places like light through a hedge. Its tail curled down and round the base of the well, and the snow had not settled on it at all.
Tomas set the bowl down and waited. After a while the cat stood, stretched its spine into a question mark, and walked back across its own tracks towards the warm kitchen. He noticed then that it had left nothing behind on the snow, not a single print, and that the lines of its body were already softening where the flakes touched them, as if the drawing were slowly being rubbed out by someone who did not want to be caught at it.
