The boats had been gone three days when Donnan came up the shingle with the old bow over his shoulder and a single arrow in his hand. Its fletching was not feathers but ash leaves, pressed flat and bound with waxed thread. Nobody on Eilean Rhu had seen an arrow like it, and the woman who kept the bothy said that was the first warning.

The bow had hung above the hearth since the great storm, and nobody had strung it since. But the gulls had come inland to pick at the midden, and the children were hungry, so Donnan took it down and drew the string. The arrow went across the bay like a thrown stone and struck the cliff face where a lone ash grew out of a crack in the rock. The tree shivered from root to crown, and a single leaf came spinning down into his palm, dry as paper and warm as a hand.

The boats came home that evening, every one of them, though the wind had been out of the north all day. The bothy woman said the bow had caught the weather by the collar and turned it. Donnan hung the bow back on its nails and never drew it again, but each spring he climbed the cliff to the ash, picked one leaf, and pressed it between the pages of his psalter.

On the nights when the sea was rough, he left the psalter open on the windowsill, the leaf face up, and in the morning the leaf was always gone and the water lay as flat as slate.
