Small swallow tattoo on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A small swallow in flight is drawn in thin black linework on pale skin. The bird is angled towards the upper right, with its wings and forked tail defined by single strokes and light hatching. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with a dark grey garment and a striped background softly out of focus around it.

The swallows came back to Carrow House the week the lift broke for the third time, and nobody on the fourteenth floor could agree whether that counted as a sign or just May. You stood at the balcony rail with a mug of tea going cold in your hand and watched them stitch the air between the concrete fins, low and quick, as though the block had been built around their flight path and no one had told the council.

Dolores in 14C claimed the nest under the walkway lamp was older than the lift and older than the caretaker's van. A swallow that nested over your door, she said, brought a year of luck and a summer of mess. 'Which is it this year, love?' she asked when she caught you at the bins, her shopping trolley rattling over the paving. You didn't know. You had a letter from the housing office in your coat pocket that you had not opened, and the birds were the only thing in the building that seemed to know where they were going.

On Thursday the nest was empty. One feather was caught on the lamp bracket, dark and forked at the end, and you stood holding it up to the light until Dolores shouted from her window that the lift was working again. You took the stairs instead. Fourteen floors, one landing light flickering, the smell of someone's fried onions drifting through the fire door.

At the top, the roof door stuck the way it always did. You shouldered it open and the sky came at you wide and blue, and there they were, three of them, cutting figures over the car park with their tails opening and closing like scissors. You kept the feather in your fist and let the wind find the gap between the buildings, and for once you did not count the floors back down.
