Bow and keyhole heart chest cover-up, before and after
Neo-trad · Chest · Mixed · Photo
The top panel shows an older, faded tattoo of a pink bow with ribbon trails around a filigree heart with a keyhole, with faint outlines of birds above it. The lower panel shows the same bow and heart reworked into a larger cover-up, with fine black feather linework, a pink and purple mandala with dotted detail, and soft grey and pink shading. The ink is mainly pink, purple and grey with black linework, and the composition is centred on the upper chest.

Enid Pryce had kept the heart box on the shelf above her bench for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had opened it, because nobody had the key. Now the shop on Fargate was being cleared, and her nephew Dean wanted the lot valued before the auction. Ruth, who had mended locks in that back room since she was sixteen, was asked to look.

The box was filigree brass, shaped like a heart, with a keyhole no bigger than a grain of rice set dead centre. Ruth turned it under the lamp. The bow fixed to the lid was pink silk gone the colour of weak tea, and the ribbon trails had frayed where someone had tied and untied them too often. She spent the evening with a set of picks and a jeweller's loupe, working the wards one at a time the way her father had taught her, listening for the small give.
Near midnight the lid lifted. Inside there was no jewellery, only a pair of grey feathers, a pressed mandala of dried heather and a card in Enid's square hand: For whoever can open it. Dress it properly. Don't let them throw it away. Ruth laughed, then didn't. She took the box home instead of letting it go to the auction, and over three weekends she stitched a new bow around it, with feathers curling out from the edges as if they might lift off the table.
On the Monday, Dean rang. Did it open? Ruth looked at the box on her kitchen table, the keyhole catching the light. Yes, she said. It was never locked, Dean. It only wanted someone to look properly. Then she set the feathers back inside, where Enid had left them.
