Watercolour owl on upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A front-facing owl with wide, round eyes, feathered wings and a scalloped chest fills the centre of the frame. Bold black outlines sit over soft washes of orange, yellow, blue, green and purple that bleed past the linework in places. Other tattoos and skin freckles are visible at the edges of the photo.

Mr Quill from number four says it has been coming down off the cliff since the regatta. He says it flew through the open tins outside the paint shop on the front, that the ochre and cobalt went straight to its feathers. I laughed at him, but then the blue bled into its chest where the scales are, like rain soaking into a wet wall, and I could not make it out properly at all.

I left a saucer of milk on the step, which Mrs Pargeter says is a waste. This evening the saucer was empty and there was a single feather on the sill, green at the tip and orange at the root, with a little purple smudge where it had brushed the window frame. I have pinned it inside my hat box. Do not tell Mother.

Come in August and bring your good paints. Love, Dot
