Neo-traditional butterfly with a heart

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A butterfly with spread wings sits at the centre of the frame, with a grey shaded body, a small red heart and long black antennae. The bold black outlines are filled with solid teal, coral, salmon and red, with dotted accents and light highlights on the wings. The composition is centred and fills most of the frame against blurred skin and fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had kept the yard white since Boxing Day, and Joan Pryce had stopped expecting anything to move in it. So when the barn door banged open on a Tuesday morning in February and a butterfly came tumbling through the cold, she stood with the bucket of mash slopping against her boot and watched it climb toward the rafters as if it had an appointment there.

It was the wrong colour for February. Teal ran along the forewings, with coral and salmon bleeding out toward the edges and a red so dark it looked wet. The black outlines were thick as pencil lead. Her father would have called it a dead leaf blown in from somewhere warmer, and he would have been wrong, because it landed on the lid of the old milk churn and folded its wings like a hand closing around a letter. A small red heart sat on its body, the only thing about it that looked put there on purpose.

She fetched sugar water from the kitchen, though her hands were shaking, and set the cup on the sill. The butterfly drank, antennae twitching. Joan thought of the ewe numbers on the table, the bank letter under the teapot, and Dan's van gone since November. Nobody had asked her to keep anything alive this winter.

By noon the sun had swung round the barn and the thing lifted off, climbing into the cold light as if it were nothing at all. Joan went back to the mash. She left the barn door open a crack on purpose.
