Bow tattoo on the lower stomach

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small bow is tattooed on the lower abdomen, drawn in dark outline with grey shading that gives the loops and tails some volume. The skin is pale and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with a hand with pink nails and a ring resting beside it. The background is a patterned skirt and a knitted sleeve, and the warm, soft lighting gives the photo a faded tone.

Right, settle down, and the chairs at the back, you can hear me from there. You all remember Miss Pardoe's hall, the smell of floor polish and boiled cabbage. I'm going to tell you about the bow that went missing in the spring of 1974, because nobody in this room ever found out what happened to it, and I was the one who knew.

Dorothy Venn had a ribbon of green silk, a gift from an aunt who'd been to Blackpool. She tied it in a bow every morning on her left plait, and every morning she tied it again, looser, then tighter, because she said a bow had to look like it was about to fly off and never quite did. One Tuesday it was gone. Mrs Cairns searched the cloakroom, the coat pegs, the bins behind the gym. Dorothy cried into the register until the ink ran.

Here's the bit you'll not like. I took it. Not to be wicked. I had a hole the size of a shilling in the cuff of my brother's hand-me-down jumper, and I wanted that bow to sit on something that needed mending. I wound it round the wool and tied it off, and I wore it all week, and when people asked, I said it was from my nan.

On the last day of term I found it folded flat in my coat pocket, and I could not bring myself to hand it back. So I posted it to Dorothy in a Valentine's envelope with no name on it. She kept it, she told me years later in the function room at the Miners' Club, in a tin with her gran's buttons. Hands up if you've still got something in a tin. Good. Now, who's getting the next round?
