Small daisy tattoo on the hip

Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo

A small daisy is drawn in dark outline on bare skin just above the waistband of dark clothing. The petals have fine black linework with light grey shading, and the centre is filled with yellow ink. A hand with dark nail polish rests at the left edge of the frame, and a soft lens flare sits over the top left.

Dear Tom,

The frost has got into the top field again and the ewes are standing about in it looking put out, the way your grandfather used to. I found the seed tin on the dresser this morning, the one with the cracked lid, and inside was your daisy, pressed flat between two pages of the Farmers Weekly. You must have left it there the summer you went. It has gone the colour of weak tea, but the yellow middle still shows through when I hold it up to the window.

I keep thinking about the afternoon you pulled the petals off the one by the gate, counting, and got to the last one and said "not" and flung the stalk over the wall at the bullocks. Your mother said you would be sorry for that one day. I didn't say anything, but I went and picked the next daisy and counted it myself, and it came out "loves me", which I have decided counts for the whole family.

The milk lorry comes at six now instead of seven, so I am up before the light. Mr Pryce's boy has taken over the round and he leaves the churns by the wrong gate, but he means well. The hens have stopped laying with the cold, and I have stopped complaining about it, mostly.

Write back and tell me what the city is like. Tell me whether the lights really stay on all night. And if you have a moment, send me a photo of whatever is growing up through the pavement there, so I know something is.

Love, Nan
