Blossom branch with script on the abdomen
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A fine black linework branch with small buds and three coral-red flowers sits on the lower abdomen, angling diagonally from upper left to lower right. Beside the lower flowers, delicate black script lettering appears to read as a short phrase. The photograph is black and white, so the colour is confined to the flowers, and the composition is a close crop of skin with the navel visible above.

Ilse had counted the switchbacks of the Sallow Pass twice already when the carrier's boy came up to the hut with a bundle wrapped in oilcloth. Inside was a branch of blossom cut below the last frost line, its buds still tight as rivets. A strip of paper was tied to it with red thread, and on it, in her sister Marta's pencil, were the words she had been waiting a winter to read. Come home by the time it opens.

She tucked the branch inside her coat, against her ribs where the cold could not reach it, and started up the last of the scree. The mule complained at every step. The wind came off the north face with a sound like someone dragging a sheet across a table, and the snow along the track had gone grey with grit. Twice she stopped to shake the water from her sleeves and check the knot on the thread, and twice the paper was still there, a little softer at the edges than before.
At the cairn she unwrapped the branch and found that three of the buds had split in the warmth of her body. Coral petals lay folded inside them like something kept back for a long time. She sat on the stone step with the wind on her neck and took the pencil from her pocket. On the back of Marta's note she wrote one line, then another, and when she had finished she tied the paper to the cairn's iron hook where the next traveller would find it.
The valley lay open below, green at the bottom and white at the top. Ilse stood, shouldered the pack, and began the descent with the blossom held upright in front of her like a lamp, so the wind could not take it.
