Brain and heart tattoos on two forearms
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two tattoos sit side by side on the inner forearms and wrists: a brain on the left and an anatomical heart with visible vessels on the right. Both are rendered in black and grey using fine stippled dots to build shading and texture, with the heart showing more defined outlines. The designs are centred on each arm against plain skin, with a tiled floor and dark clothing visible in the background.

The old surgeon's lecture hall on Thessaly Island had a glass case of specimens that the islanders called the Quiet Room, and Maren Holt had spent three summers cataloguing what was in it. The brain in the second jar had been her grandmother's teacher's, pickled in 1911 by a man who wrote a letter apologising for the folds. Maren drew everything. Her pencil never dotted, only hatched, so when the ferry agent asked why her sketches looked like sand she told him the sea had been at them.

On the last afternoon the wind came off the bay hard enough to rattle the shutters, and a boy from the harbour arrived with a crate of eels and a message from the mainland. Her brother Tobin had written it in pencil on a fish-shop receipt. He wanted to know which of the two of them had kept the drawings, the thinking one or the feeling one, because the notary needed an answer before Monday.
Maren looked at the heart in the open case, its valves stiff with formalin, and then at the brain beside it, grey and wrinkled as a walnut. She took her stippling pen from the drawer, the one she used only for dots, and began on the receipt's back. Each tiny point took a minute, then a minute more. By dusk she had made two organs of ink on the paper, one beside the other, neither sure of the other, and she signed them both with her own name and posted them without a word of explanation.
