A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The aortic valve was the hard part, and Dorothy Pilling never let anyone forget it. She sat at the long oak table in the back room of Hartley and Vine's with a magnifying lens screwed into one eye, pencilling vessels onto tracing paper while the rest of us argued over lunch about the football. Nobody drew a heart the way she did. Her chambers looked like they were straining to hold something in.

The job was for the second edition of a textbook nobody in Ashby had ever read. Mr Vine wanted hearts that would print clean at the size of a thumbnail, so every line had to be thin enough to survive the plates and dark enough to survive the press. Dorothy took three weeks over one drawing. She had a heart on loan from the infirmary, kept in a jar of formalin on the shelf above the kettle, and she would turn it in the lamplight and sketch it from four sides before she let herself put pen to card.

When the book came out she was not in it. The engraver had cut her initials into the copper, then planed them off to make room for a notice about tonic wine, and she laughed about it for a week. On her last afternoon she pushed the jar across the table to me and said the heart was mine if I wanted it, and that I should draw the valves slowly, because the valves were where people lied.

I took the jar home and kept it on the windowsill above the sink. Every morning I still check the light on the chambers before I pick up a pen, the way she taught me, and I count the vessels out loud, one, two, three, as if she might be standing at my shoulder with the lens in her eye, waiting for me to get them wrong.
