Two matching shaded heart tattoos with script initials on the ankles, one in red and one in grey.

Matching heart tattoos on ankles

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

Two near-identical heart tattoos sit side by side on the ankles, each containing an interlocking script monogram outlined in fine dark linework. The left heart is shaded in red and the right is shaded in grey, with soft gradients that give both hearts volume. The photo is taken straight on at close range, with the two tattoos centred and the skin tone and lighting kept even across both feet.

The lock at Stanwick had been empty since Tuesday, so you tied the barge up on the wrong side and waited for Nell to shout about it. She didn't. She sat on the cabin roof with a tin of red gouache and a brush worn down to three hairs, painting a heart onto the lid of the stove box. Inside it she was working two letters into a single looping knot, the way their grandmother once stitched the family names onto every tea towel on the boat.

"Is that the red one?" you asked. "The red one's for Pip," she said, not looking up. "She'll be back for the Easter run, and she'll want to see it matches." She dipped the brush, and then, with a face like someone easing out a splinter, she painted the second heart beside the first. She had mixed its grey from soot scraped off the old stove pipe and a drop of washing-up water. It came out the colour of wet slate.

You watched the grey settle into the outline and thought about Pip, who had left with a rucksack, a borrowed fare and no promise of a return date. Nell had never once said she missed her. She had only ever painted the things she could not say.

When the paint dried you lifted the lid and held it up to the lock light. The red heart was bright enough to hurt, and the grey one was soft at the edges, as if someone had rubbed it with a thumb. Nell took the lid from you, set it on the roof where the sun could find it, and said, "Right. Now we wait for the water to come up." The gate groaned, the barge lifted, and the two hearts slid together across the tin until they touched.
