Brass knuckles and roses with Love thy Neighbor
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A shaded pencil-style drawing of a set of brass knuckles with three open finger holes, framed by two roses and ribbon banners. The script lettering reads Love thy Neighbor across the design, with Lev.19:18 in smaller italic script at the lower right. The rendering uses soft grey shading and dark outlines on a plain white background.

Maud Ellery found the brass knuckles in the long grass under the Pennick boundary tree, three weeks after the row about the wall. They were heavy and cold and still tacky with someone's pocket lint, and she turned them over in her palm while the wasps worked at the windfalls around her boots. The three finger holes looked up at her like eyes.

Her neighbour Ray had been shouting across that wall since June. His lad had dragged a ladder over and taken the top off two of her Discovery trees, and Maud had said things in the lane she would not repeat in chapel. Now she could picture Ray's big hand closing round these knuckles, could picture him marching up her path with them in his fist, certain of his right to be angry.
She did not ring the police. She took the pruning shears down to the wall instead and cut a bundle of the wild roses that had threaded through the wire from his side years ago, when his mother was still alive and the two of them still shared a bottle of cider on the bench. The thorns caught her sleeves. By the time she had tied the stems with garden twine, the light had gone the colour of weak tea.
At his back door she set the knuckles on the step, bound them in the roses, and knocked. Ray came out in his slippers and looked at the bundle, then at her, then at the apple still in her other hand. Neither of them said a word. He took the apple, bit into it, and nodded towards the trees. Maud went home with her palms scratched and left the knuckles behind on his step, the roses already drinking the rain from the three open holes.
