Breathe script on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink script tattoo spelling the word Breathe with a large capital B and looping flourishes extending from the letters. The linework is bold and smooth, with solid black ink and no shading. The photograph is taken in black and white, showing the design centred on a pale wrist against a plain background.

The big top at Hollis and Varley's has been sagging since the autumn the canvas rotted over the ring. You hold the trapeze bar in the cold of the empty lot while Mother Oriel, who has run the wardrobe since before you were born, sews a loose gold thread onto a sleeve without looking up. "The bar's slick with frost," she says. "Breathe, love. The wire doesn't care how cold you are."

The last crowd was eleven people and a dog. Mr Tennant has sold the elephant to a farm in Norfolk and kept the calliope only because he cannot bear to hear it go. Tonight it is just you, the high rigging, and two lamps on a cable, with the rope creaking the way it did when your uncle taught you to fall.
Halfway up, the old fear arrives like a draught under a door, and you count the way he taught you: in through the nose, hold, out slow, each breath stretched into the loop of a capital letter you can almost see in the rigging light. The first stroke is always the hardest to hold.
At the top the lamps go out one by one because Tennant is saving the power bill. You release the bar. For one long second there is nothing beneath you but the dark and the smell of sawdust, and then you open your arms and the rope takes you. Somewhere below, Oriel claps twice, once for the drop and once for the catch.
