Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of the upper torso with the words "Just Breathe" written in flowing black script. The lettering has smooth, consistent linework with a bold stroke and fine hairline joins. The soft greyscale lighting and plain pale skin keep the focus on the tattoo, with an arm visible at the top edge of the frame.

The boat came in on Tuesday with Dafydd Pring at the tiller and the net wound round the prop. Nobody on the quay shouted. Mrs Ashe stood by the bollard with her shawl pulled tight, counting gulls, because that's what she does instead of praying. When the men climbed the ladder they were as grey as the slipway, and for a full minute nobody said a word.

It was a long, looping hand that a child could follow, with the thin joins that catch the light. Breathe in while the wave lifts you. Breathe out as it goes under. Simple things are the ones we forget when we're frightened.

So here it is, in ink and in my worst handwriting. Come home on the Thursday flood. Keep your mouth shut when the water closes over your head, and count to four. The kettle's on, and I've left the porch light burning, not for the sea, but for you.
