Dream script on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the inner wrist with the word Dream written in black script lettering across the skin. The linework is smooth and fairly bold, with the capital D having a looped, flowing stroke and the remaining letters joined in a continuous line. The ink is solid black on a light skin tone, and the word is centred in the frame against a plain background.

Ardath Kell had kneaded the same dough for thirty-one years, and every morning she was up before the bakehouse chimney had begun to smoke. Low Tarrow had one oven, one bell and one baker, and nobody in the village thought that strange.

Her apprentice, a lanky boy called Tobin Wray, came in one February morning with the colour gone from his face. He had been dreaming of the sea, he said, and of a ship with a lamp that would not go out. He asked whether dreams were lies. Ardath did not answer. She set him to shaping loaves and watched the window, where the sky had not yet decided what colour it would be.
She told him the old way. Bread takes the night into itself, she said, and whatever you dream while it proves gets baked in with the crust. Score each loaf with a word before it goes in, and mean it, because the oven keeps what you mean. Tobin laughed at that, then stopped, because the oven door swung open by itself and the room filled with the smell of salt and tar.
On the flour bench lay one round loaf, already scored across the top in a looping hand. The word was DREAM, though neither of them had written it. Ardath broke it open. Inside was a small lamp, not burned, and a ship turning slowly toward the harbour mouth. She wrapped the lamp in cloth and put it in the boy's hands. "Eat the bread and you will sleep," she said. "Then go and find out whose ship that is."
