Brush strokes and red splash on a shoulder blade
Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo sits across the upper back and shoulder blade and is made of bold black and grey brush-like strokes, with soft grey wash and spatter around them. Small areas of red and a single blue dot add colour to the otherwise monochrome composition. The shading is loose and painterly, with the lines tapering and breaking up at the edges, and the photo is taken from behind against a plain light background.

Dear Priya,

I know you slipped out before the speeches, so you missed Mr Abernethy finally admitting that the ink cupboard was never locked, only stuck. He stood by the buffet with a paper cup of warm lager and told anyone who would listen that the best thing he ever taught us was to stop fussing over the outline and let the brush do what it wanted.
I thought about that all the way home on the 47. You remember the last lesson before Easter, when we were meant to paint a single stroke on a sheet of lining paper, and Dean Fairbrother flicked his loaded brush at the window and got a blue dot on the glass instead? Abernethy didn't shout. He just said, "Keep it."
Nobody kept it. The caretaker scrubbed the pane that week. But I've been thinking about how a mistake can be the bit that holds the whole picture up, the way one heavy black stroke pulled everything else into line. Last night I took the bottle of red ink from Mum's kitchen drawer and dropped a little on a folded tea towel, just to see how it would bleed.
Write back and tell me if you still have your sheet. I'd like to know whether it kept.
Love, Hannah
