Yarn ball and crochet hook on the shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A ball of blue yarn with light and dark strands is pierced by a purple-red crochet hook running diagonally across the design. Thin blue swirling lines curl around the yarn ball, framing it on a pale skin background. The thin outlines and soft colour fills give the piece a light, illustrative look, with the design centred on the upper chest.

Dear Morag,

The wool came off the boat on Tuesday, wet through and smelling of the harbour, and I have spent three evenings unpicking Tam's old gansey by the range. He will not miss it. He has been sulking since the Fulmar went out without him, and sulking suits him better than the gansey ever did.
You asked in your last letter whether I still hold with the crochet, now that the ladies at the kirk have taken up knitting for the lifeboat men. I do. A knitter needs four needles and a good temper. A crochet hook needs only one, and a dropped stitch can be caught again without the whole work running off the needles like a torn net. I have my mother's bone hook, though I keep it wrapped in a clean handkerchief so the salt cannot get at it.
The blanket is for Elspeth's bairn, due at Hogmanay. I am working in shells, three rounds of blue to every one of cream, and the ball in my lap grows smaller each night while the square on my knee grows larger. Some nights I think the wool is winning and some nights I think it is me.
Tam came in just now, stood dripping at the door and asked what I was making. I told him a blanket. He said he had never seen me make anything so small. I said that was because he had never been home long enough to notice. He laughed, then went quiet, then said the Fulmar would be back by the new year. I believe him. I have started a second ball, in case.
