Budgie in an ornate birdcage flash

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A budgie perches on an orange branch inside a grey, scrolled birdcage framed by ornate filigree and leafy green sprigs. The bird is rendered in colour with soft shading and dark spots, while the cage bars, scrolls and the drop-shaped ornament below are drawn in bold black outline with grey shading. The design sits centrally on a pale background, with dotted lines trailing from the bottom of the frame.

Dear Wren, the cage door on the east gallery has been open since the autumn storms, and nobody has had the heart to shut it. The old keepers say the budgie was hatched in the year the orchards went dark, when the last glasshouse in Harrowgate was still making its own air. Its feathers went yellow and green from the sun-lamps, and the children who tend the ring-fields call it the Lantern Bird, because at dusk its breast catches the light like a coin dropped in water.

I went up to the perch this morning with a jug of the sweet sap we boil from birch, and found it sitting on the orange branch as if the door had never mattered. The ornament under the cage, that beaded drop of copper and green glass, has come loose from its chain and now hangs by one hook, swinging every time the wind comes through the broken panes. Mother says it was a lamp once, before the scrollwork rusted round it. I think it was a bell.

Do you remember what Grandfather said about birds that stay? He meant the ones that come back to the same window every winter, long after the seed runs out. I used to think he was being sentimental. Now I sit here with the bird at my shoulder, not moving, not singing, only turning its head to watch the dotted line of lamps the engineers strung across the valley last week.

Come home before the frost. Bring the good scissors. I think the bird wants its wing trimmed so it cannot leave, and I find I cannot make myself be the one to do it. Your sister, Ilse.
