Bird and pocket watch design sketch
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A pencil drawing of a small bird with spread wings in front of an open pocket watch on a chain, with Roman numerals and an ornate case. Leaves and a flower-like shape sit around the bird's base and the watch edge. Blue and red coloured pencil lines and light shading give a sketched, warm-toned finish on a cream background.

You learn the pit by its noises before you learn its shape. The winding engine at Harrow Clough sighs at ten to six, and by the time the cage drops you have counted the bell taps twice and found your place in the queue. Your grandfather's watch hangs from a chain across your waistcoat, its case worn smooth where his thumb rested for forty years. It runs four minutes fast, because he never trusted a shift that started on time.

The wren arrived the spring the tally went short. It built in the gap above the lamp room door and sang at the buzzer, so the men began to set their clocks by it rather than by the watch. You thought it foolish, a bird keeping time for grown men with their wages to lose. Then the chain snapped on the hook one February morning and the watch lay dead in your palm, and the wren kept singing regardless, as if nothing had happened at all.
That morning the cage did not come up. You stood at the head with the others, lamps guttering in the wind off the spoil heaps, and listened for a bell that never rang. When the wren fell silent, the quiet was worse than any signal. You opened the case, held the stopped watch to your ear, and heard nothing but the bird's last note. Then you walked to the gate, lifted the latch, and let the wren carry the hour out over the valley.
