Birdcage and roses tattoo design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink line drawing on paper shows an open ornate birdcage with a scrolled pattern, a bird flying above it and a second bird perched on its side. Roses with leaves and stems frame the cage at the lower left and upper right. The work uses solid outlines and fine detail with no shading or colour, and two pencils lie across the lower right of the frame.

Now sit close, for the wood does not like to hear this said loud. He made them for magistrates' wives and for tallymen who wanted their canaries to sing at dinner. Every one had scrollwork so fine you could count the curls by candlelight, and every one had a little brass latch that Abel swore no bird could ever work out.

His daughter Nell was seven that spring and did not care for scrollwork. She cared for the birds that came down to the rose hedge at the edge of the yard, the thin brown ones and the blue ones with the orange breast. One morning she carried out an empty cage, opened its door with a hairpin, and sat with it in her lap until the sparrows came. They did not go in. They sat on the wire and chattered, and when the sun got high one of them flew off over the beeches, and the others went after it. Nell cried until her father came out with his hammer to see why the forge had gone quiet.
Abel never forged another latch. He left that cage on the hedge with its door hanging wide, and the roses grew up round its legs until you could hardly see the wire. To this day a bird will land on the rim of it and look in, and then look at you, as if asking whether you have the nerve to shut it.
