Black ink drawing of a butterfly with patterned wings perched on a thin, swirling vine, shown as a fine line tattoo design.

Butterfly and swirling vine design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A butterfly with open, patterned wings sits at the top of a long, thin vine that curls downward in S-shaped loops and small scrolls. The linework is fine and consistent, with solid black areas on the wing patterns and the body. The drawing is black ink on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mooring rope has been coiled wrong since Reading, and the lock keeper tells you so before you have even tied off. You let him talk. The barge is called Patience and she sits low with coal, her black hull slick from the morning drizzle, and you have just learned that the river does not care who owns the rope.

Above the cabin roof, a butterfly with wings like stained glass rides the air, dipping to the tiller, then to the wet brass of the mooring post. It seems not to know it is out of place in February. You watch it settle at the top of the bow rope where the hemp meets the ring, and you think of the grandmother who worked this stretch before the railway took the carrying trade. She used to say the swallows followed the barges downriver. She never mentioned butterflies.

The lock gates groan open. You take the tiller and the boat noses out, the rope sliding off the bollard in long S-shaped loops that pool on the towpath like spilt ink. The butterfly lifts with the wind and hangs over the water, then drops onto the rope itself and rides it down the curl of each coil until the last loop touches the river.

At the bend you look back. The rope trails behind you, bright with spray, scrolling out across the brown water. The butterfly is still there, perched on the final curl, going nowhere you can see. You leave the rope in the river and steer on, and for once the coil is exactly where it should be.
