Black tribal-style butterfly design on a white background, with bold swirling wings and a curled tail, shown as a standalone stencil-style drawing.

Tribal butterfly design in black

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A bold black line drawing of a stylised butterfly with tribal-style wings filled with scalloped, petal-like cutouts. The thick, tapering linework and flowing swirls on the antennae and tail give it a graphic, flowing silhouette. It is shown in solid black on a plain white background with a soft drop shadow, with no skin or body visible.

The swell has the galley rocking so hard that the kettle keeps trying to leave the hob, and you have one hand flat on the bench while the other pipes the last of the black icing across the cake. Captain Rennick's birthday is at six bells, and the cake is the only thing on this coaster that has ever been asked to look elegant.

You draw the wings first, a scalloped lattice of loops the way your mother did them on Sunday teacakes in Grimsby, each petal closed with a tight little hook. The antennae come next, two thick lines that taper to nothing, and then the long tail, which you always pipe in one breath because a stop shows. Young Tomas watches from the rack with his arms full of dishcloths and asks why the thing is black when everything else on the cake is white.

You tell him black is the colour of anything you can't scrub off, which passes for wisdom at sea. Then the ship lurches, the bag jerks, and the tail snaps at the swirl. Your heart knocks against your ribs while the broken line drags across the board, and you do the only sensible thing: you let the swirl fall into a curl of spilt sugar, press one finger through it, and find it looks exactly like a wave.

At six bells Rennick cuts the first slice, looks at the sea of icing beneath the wing, and laughs until he has to sit down. Tomas gets the crust. You never tell anyone the tail was meant to be there at all.
