A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hibiscus that grew on the wall of the Harbour Street laundry had never once been asked to bloom out of season, so when Mrs Okafor's son came home from the fishing boats with a cut across his palm and a butterfly drawn on a scrap of wrapping paper, she laughed and said the vine would only follow the sun it liked. The boy, Tomas, did not laugh. He had found the butterfly folded inside a crab pot, its wings patterned like the lace on a christening gown, and he could not stop turning it over in his fingers.

By the end of the week the vine had crept along the gutter and up the sill of the upstairs window, and three flowers had opened, pale at the throat and red at the edges, each one tilted toward the glass as if listening. Every morning there were fresh curls of green tendril where there had been none the night before. Mrs Okafor swore the blossoms smelled of salt, and then of the sea-wall at high tide, and then of nothing at all.

On the seventh morning the window stood open and the butterfly was resting on the topmost tendril, wings spread flat, its inked veins still wet. Tomas reached out to lift it away, and it lifted first, circling the laundry line twice before settling on his cut hand. The wound had closed. He held his palm up to the light and the butterfly folded its wings and was perfectly still, and somewhere down on the harbour a bell began to ring the tide in.
