Every morning Tessa Anning lifted the cloth to check them, and every morning one of them had got loose and was fluttering against the porthole, trying to reach the sea light.

When the bosun told her a butterfly on a ship was bad luck, she said a butterfly was only a moth that had decided to be looked at, and went back to her drawing.
