Blue butterfly on upper back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A large butterfly with spread wings is tattooed across the upper back, with its head and body centred below the neck. The wings have smooth, blended shading in several tones of blue, with fine pale veining, black wing borders and small white spots, giving a three-dimensional look. The butterfly is shown full frame against plain skin, with the top of the shoulders and neck visible.

Teodor had been night porter at the Morrow Street insectarium for eleven years, long enough to know the building's noises: the hum of the humidifiers, the tick of the radiators cooling, the soft thump when a moth hit the glass of the far case. Tonight the noise was a different one. Someone had left the north door propped with a brick, and the wet city air was creeping in along the floor.

He found the blue morpho in the case by the stairs, where it always rested with its wings closed. Its lid had lifted. The pin had slipped from the cork, and the great wings had folded up against the card, showing their drab brown undersides with the painted eyes that were meant to fool birds. Teodor knelt and held his breath, as if breathing might tip it over.

It was a trick of the light, the curator had told him once. Those wings held no blue at all. Each scale was ridged like a tiny fallen comb, and the colour was only the light breaking off the ridges at one particular angle. Turn the thing away and it simply vanished into the dark.

He thought of that while he eased the wings open, slowly, a millimetre at a time, until the blue flared up under the lamp like a lit window across the street. He repinned it at the original angle, then closed the case and walked back to the door, leaving it open an inch so the rain could not get in.
