Butterfly tattoo on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A butterfly with spotted, patterned wings and a segmented body sits across the forearm, with its left wing partly curving around the arm. The design is built from fine linework outlines and stippled dotwork shading that gives the wings depth, with solid black accents on the wing spots and edges. The palette is entirely black and grey against pale skin, set against a dark top and a plain grey wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The rain had stopped but the gutters still ran, and Marisol kept her collar up as she crossed the yard behind the bus depot. The night clerk at the cold store had promised her a box of unsold mothing jars for the museum, labelled and boxed, and she meant to collect them before the bins were emptied at dawn. Under the sodium lamp the wall was spattered with old posters, half torn, a boy's face peeling off a lamppost in strips.

The clerk was not there. In his place stood a shuttered hatch and a note pinned under a stone: gone to Leeds, the key is in the moth drawer. She found the drawer in the back office, where specimens lay pinned under glass, dozens of them, each with a handwritten card. One card was blank. Beside it sat a pencil sketch of a wing, and beside that a second wing, and a line where someone had clearly meant them to be joined.
She stood there longer than she meant to, thinking about the fact that a wing is only half of a thing until its partner is found. Then she tucked the blank card into her coat, turned off the office light, and walked out past the bins towards the river, where the lamps were doubled in the black water and something pale, very light and very certain, was lifting off the railings.
