Dotwork butterfly on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A butterfly with wings spread sideways, seen from the side of the inner forearm near the wrist. The bold black outlines are filled with stippled dots that create grey shading across the wings, and the thin antennae and body are drawn in solid black. The design fills the frame with the plain skin and dark background around it.

Pull your chairs in, the lot of you, and mind the sawdust, it gets in everything and never leaves. You want to know about the wings. Everyone asks about the wings. Black at the edges, where the light can't get in. Grey in the middle, where it has to fight.

The Halloran Travelling Show had gone threadbare by then. Two elephants, one tiger that wouldn't perform, and a girl named Odile Ferris who could hang from the high bar by one wrist while the crowd forgot to breathe. The wings were hers. When she lifted her arm, the silk opened sideways like a door, and the stippled grey rolled across the canvas like weather. Nobody in the county had seen anything so patient.
Then the council wanted the field for a bypass, and the bank wanted the tent poles, and in the wet spring of 1958 the big top came down in the night with a sound like a stable door slamming. Odile was in the wagon with her arm in a sling. Bartram had been dead a year by then, and the show was only a rumour on the A-road.
But they say on the first clear evening after, a girl walked out across the bare meadow with the wings folded over one arm, and when the last light found them, every dot took it at once, and the whole field went silver-grey like the inside of a wing.
