Dear Tomas,

The scrubbers on Deck Four went quiet again at the third bell, and I did what Mam taught us, counting my breaths against the ventilation hum until the panic let go of my ribs. Nobody on the ring talks about the air anymore. They talk about the water ration and who skimmed the algae vats. But I have spent six weeks inside the vents with a torch in my teeth, and I know the air is the only thing that matters.

The greenhouse is the strangest place on the Mariposa. Old Venn kept the butterflies there when the ship was still young, a few hundred pale blue things that fed on the flowering vines and were supposed to prove the cycle worked. Most died in the first decade. The ones left drift between the grow-lamps with their wings folded like sails, and when they open them the light goes through the edges, thin as paper.

Yesterday one of them landed on my glove. Its feelers curled up into tight spirals, the way the vine tendrils do when they are testing for something to hold. I held still. I did not count anything. I just breathed, slow, and the butterfly tasted the sweat on my knuckle and lifted off towards the vent grille, the one I have been trying to clear all month.

I think it was pulling the air through with it. I have not told the council. I am going back up with the spare filter tonight, and if the grille is clear by morning, you will have your window on Deck Nine after all. Keep your breath steady and tell the girls I said so. Love, Orla
