Butterfly with swirls on upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A butterfly with outstretched wings sits on the upper back, framed by black scrolling tendrils above and below. The bold black linework outlines the wings and body, while the wing panels are filled with soft pink and grey shading that gives them depth. The composition is centred on the butterfly, with the swirls balancing the design across the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tannoy has been crackling since six, and the lost property hatch at Hallam Junction is the only warm corner left on the concourse. You log the umbrellas and the single glove, then a violin case that contains nothing but a bread roll. Near the bottom of the crate is a flat tin with a faded moth printed on its lid, and when you prise it open there is a pair of paper wings inside, cut from an old seed catalogue and edged in black ink curled like a clerk's flourish.

Nobody claims it. Ruth from the buffet says the tin came in on the 4.12 to Leeds in October, left on a seat under the window, and the guard swore that seat had been empty all the way from Sheffield. You keep it on the shelf between the lost keys and a book of crosswords, and each morning, when the heater ticks, the wings lift a fraction, as if something on the platform has breathed on them.

On the third Tuesday you carry the tin out to the far end of Platform Four, where the rails are still wet and the buffers wear their rust like medals. You open it and tip the wings onto the bench. They do not fall. A gust off the cutting takes them up, turning pink where the low sun catches the ink wash, and they sail over the fence and past the signal box.

The 4.12 pulls in behind you with its doors already sighing open. You stand and watch the paper go until it is a smudge above the allotments, then walk back inside to log the empty tin as found, because you have decided that some things belong to the weather.
