Butterfly with teal ribbon on upper back

Blackwork · Back · Mixed · Photo

A butterfly outline made from bold black scrolling, with curled spirals filling the wings, sits centrally on the upper back. A teal ribbon loops through the middle of the butterfly with soft shading, and the ribbon and wings overlap in the centre. The skin is pale and the image is shown straight on, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gate had rusted shut for forty years, and Ruth had spent three mornings working the hinge pin free with oil and a borrowed drift. On the fourth, the iron finally gave, and the whole leaf swung inward with a groan that sent jackdaws up from the broken keep.

Her grandmother had told her about the gate. Built by a smith called Aske for the lady of Carrickmore, its wings were worked from flat bar into spirals so tight you could not slide a fingernail between them. Aske had wanted a butterfly, the old woman said, because the lady had been carried out of the castle as a girl in a basket and never forgot the wings that circled over the moat. Ruth had thought it a sentimental story until she brushed the scale off the upper bars and saw the outline clearly.

In the kit bag was a length of teal silk ribbon, faded where the sun had caught it in the car. Her grandmother had tied one to every gate she ever passed, a small private habit that Ruth had mocked at fifteen and now found herself copying. She looped it through the centre of the scrollwork, where the two wings met, and knotted it twice, the way the old woman had shown her with cold fingers on a bus shelter.

When she stood back, the ribbon hung against the rust like something still warm. A breeze came up off the water, lifted the silk, and the gate creaked on its restored hinge as if it had decided to open. Ruth left it that way and walked down the path without looking back.
