Black line tattoo of a swirled heart beside a teal ribbon with a semicolon inside its loop, shown on skin.

Swirl heart with teal ribbon and semicolon

Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a heart outline filled with black swirling linework on its left half, paired with a teal ribbon shape that loops through the right side of the heart. A black semicolon sits inside the ribbon loop, and the teal areas have a mottled, textured shading. The design is centred on plain skin with even lighting and a clear view of the full motif.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shepherd's widow, Ruth Tallow, had kept the cairn at Hollin Gap for thirty winters, and every spring she untied the faded ribbons the travellers left and wove them into a new one. Nobody asked her why. The pass was a bad place to walk in the dark, and people came up it for reasons of their own, most of which they did not care to say at the bottom.

One March a young carter came through with his cart empty and his face grey. He stopped at the cairn, looked at the stones for a long while, then unpicked a strip of teal cloth from his coat and tied it to the wind-bent rowan. Ruth saw him push a scrap of paper under a stone. When he had gone down the far side she lifted the stone. On the paper was a single mark, a dot above a hook, and nothing else.

She knew that mark. Her mother had cut it into the lintel to say that a sentence was not finished, that the speaker had stopped for breath and meant to go on. Ruth drew it now on the back of an old tally sheet and tucked it into the cairn beside his.

The carter came back in June, sunburnt and steady, with a sack of flour he said he owed her. He did not mention the paper. He only asked whether the rowan had kept his ribbon, and Ruth said it had, and that it was the strongest thing on the hill. Then she tied a fresh loop of teal into the swirling knot she always used, and the wind came round the gap and set every ribbon going at once, like a sentence picking up where it had paused.
