The net had snagged on the Mayfly's keel again, and Dot Rowe was still picking knots loose with a bent nail when the first boats came round the breakwater. Her fingers were raw. The tide was making, and her father would want the gear dry before it turned.

Ellis came up the slip with two chipped mugs and set one on the upturned creel beside her. He didn't ask how long she'd been at it. He never did. Out past the light the sky had gone the colour of wet slate, and gulls worked the wake of the trawler Sorrow Bell, which had come back with more than anyone expected.

"Dad says leave the bottom panel," he said. "Says the lads will fix it Monday."

"Dad says a lot of things." She pulled a length of twine from the coil, wound it twice round her wrist and knotted it, a habit from childhood for keeping loose things close. The twine was the cheap sort from the chandlery, faded pink and blue where the sun had got to it, and she had forgotten the colours until Ellis mentioned them.

By the time the tide turned, the net hung clean from the rafters of the net loft, every mesh whole. Dot cut the last tail of twine with her teeth, looked at the knot on her wrist, and left it there.
