Cacti and eye in geometric frame on a calf

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A large geometric frame of straight lines and overlapping polygons encloses several cacti, including a tall branching one and a smaller flowering one. Above the frame, an eye sits inside a triangle with two feathers below it, and a small dark motif appears at the bottom. Fine lines and stippled dotwork shade the ground and plants in black ink, and the photograph shows the calf against a stone wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cactus house had been drawn to a plan nobody on the site could read, so Hollis took the measurements twice and got the same answer both times, which he did not trust. Three hexagons nested inside a larger one, and the rafters ran off at angles that met nowhere in particular. Mrs Vane wanted the ground fixed before the frost. He carried the theodolite up the slope at six, while the light was still flat and the dew made the dust cling to his boots.

Inside, the glass held the heat like a held breath. The tall cactus had outgrown its pot and bent its seven arms towards the south wall, one of them leaning so far it had cracked a pane. The small one had flowered overnight, pale and sudden, and he wrote that down because the book asked for observations. Above the door the builder had set a brass sighting mark inside a triangle, with two carved feathers beneath it. Nobody had asked for feathers. Hollis asked the builder why, and the man only shrugged and said the lines wanted something to rest on.

He came back the next afternoon to set his final stake. The small flower had closed by noon, and the tall cactus threw its shadow across the floor in a long, exact blade. Hollis checked the angle against the plan, then checked it again. The shadow ran straight across the dark stone at the foot of the bottom polygon, the one shaped like a bird's skull, and the brass mark above the door sat on the line. He wrote Correct in the margin, underlined it twice, and sat down in the dust with the book open on his knee.
