Geometric triangles and arrow on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo on the forearm combines nested triangles with a central figure topped by wing-like shapes and flanked by small circles. A vertical arrow extends down from the lower triangle. The fine lines are combined with stippled dot shading, and the piece is rendered entirely in black and grey ink against a plain skin tone, with a tiled floor and dark chair in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp in the customs hut at Kelso Crossing had one working bulb, so I read the manifest by holding it at an angle to my face. Three hundred crates of surveyed glass, all stamped with the same triangle, and a clerk who kept touching the arrow stencilled under each seal as if checking it was still wet. I asked him what the figure at the top was meant to be. He said it was a saint, or a clock, depending on which side of the river you had been born.

The man who brought the crates across that morning had a forearm the colour of weak tea, and on it the same drawing, done in pinpricks of grey so fine I had to lean in to be sure they were dots at all. Two small circles sat either side of the central shape like moons that had lost interest in their orbits. He did not roll down his sleeve. He told me the design was a map of the valley, drawn by a woman who had never seen the valley, only the shadow it threw at noon.

I signed the form anyway. The arrow points south on the seal, and on the glass it points down, and I have spent three winters deciding which of those is the lie. Last month a crate came back with a single pane missing, the edge of it ground to the exact width of that vertical line. Nobody could tell me where it had gone. I keep it on my desk now, propped against the lamp, and in the right light the dots on its surface line up with the stars over the crossing.
