Rocket and moon in a triangle on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo on the inner forearm shows a stippled moon with small stars inside an upturned triangle, with a dotted rocket ship below it. Fine dotted and solid linework outlines the rocket's fins, portholes and striped body, and thin construction circles and dashed guide lines surround it. The shading is built from dense dots and grey tones, and the composition is centred on the forearm against a blurred indoor background.

Brother Anselm has taught you to count the dots before you trust them. Every night at vespers you climb the ladder to the leads of the scriptorium roof with his brass dividers in your pocket, and every night the moon sits in the same triangle of sky above the bell tower, pocked and grey, as if someone had stippled it onto the dark with a pen nib. He calls the triangle the Trinity window. You call it the window because you have stopped arguing with him about anything that might be true.

The rocket was the abbot's idea, and it was a bad one. Last spring a crate arrived from Ghent containing the drawings of a Flemish engineer who had written to the order asking for prayers for his machine. Brother Anselm read the letter aloud at supper, then laughed until he had to leave the table. The abbot did not laugh. He sent you to the cellar with a lamp and told you to bring up the brass casing, and you spent a week polishing portholes that would never see glass.
On the feast of the Assumption the rocket was finally fired, a little, from the gravel of the cloister garth. It rose perhaps a yard, wobbled on its rings of chalk, and lay down again like a dog. Brother Anselm wept and then swore, and then he wrote in the margin of the engineer's letter a single line you copied out later: the moon does not need us to visit it, only to keep watching. You slid the note into the window frame, under the loose stone, where the dust is thin.
