Cactus and flowers tattoo design

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing on paper shows a saguaro-style cactus with three arms, each marked with spines and vertical ridge lines. Below it sit two open five-petalled flowers with dotted centres, flanked by leaves and dark triangular shapes. The linework is uniform black with solid black fills on the leaves and petal accents, and the design is centred on a plain off-white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rosalind Oyelaran had kept the same saguaro in a terracotta pot on her porch for thirty-one years, and every week Dev Halloran, who drove the mail van out past the salt flats, watched it put out one more finger of green. Three arms the first time he noticed. Four by the spring, when the ridges on the trunk ran tight as the pleats of a good skirt. He never asked her what it meant. People out there did not ask.

The letters were what kept him coming back. Rosalind wrote to a brother in Lagos, to a nurse in Tucson, to a man she had once danced with in a hall in Barstow, and never once did an envelope come back marked return to sender. Dev carried them the way a man carries eggs. Then one Thursday a blue envelope arrived from a Mr Anselm Vogt in Bremen, and he thought nothing of it until he saw her face on the step as she tore it open.

She read it twice, then went inside and came back with scissors and a jam jar of water. She snipped the lowest spine on the cactus, the one that had always pointed at the road, and dropped the stub into the jar. "He's coming," she said, as if reporting the weather. "Two weeks. He says he remembers the hall."

Dev drove on. Eleven days later the porch was empty except for the pot, and the saguaro had a fifth arm, bent low like a man bowing at a door. Rosalind's car was gone. Dev never learnt whether the man from Bremen had come, but he kept the route, and each Thursday he slowed at that bend and looked for new green on the old plant, which, out there, was the nearest thing anyone had to a reply.
