Floral pistol line drawing

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A handgun silhouette is built from layered botanical elements, including large five-petalled flowers, smaller blossoms, buds and leaves. The linework is black ink with fine hatching and stippled dotwork shading inside the petals and along the grip. The design is shown in black and grey on a plain light grey background, with the pistol running across the image from the barrel on the left to the grip at the lower right.

Dear Edie, the pass closed on Tuesday and it has not reopened, so we are snowed in with four guests, a half-barrel of Bass and a cat that will not leave the range. I am writing by the lamp in the back parlour because the post van will not be coming up the hill before March, and I want you to have this while it is still fresh in my head.

The quiet one, the seed man who came up from Exeter with his samples in a battered tin, asked me for ink on Wednesday night. Nobody asks for ink at an inn. He sat at the long table and drew on the back of an old carrier's bill, very slowly, and when he was done he turned it round to show me. It was a pistol, the sort our Dad kept in the bureau when we were small, but every part of it was flowers. Lilies for the barrel, open-faced blooms along the top, leaves tucked into the grip like a bunch on a grave. He said his mother had kept her husband's old gun in a drawer for thirty years and, when she finally couldn't bear to open it, she unscrewed what she could, filled the holes with bulbs, and let the rest rust into the earth beside the back step. He said the drawing was the only way he could say what the garden had become.

I didn't know what to say, so I said the soup was on. He laughed for the first time all week and ate two bowls. This morning the lane was still white to the gateposts, but he had gone, and the drawing was pinned by the range with a drawing pin through one petal. Tucked behind it was a packet of seed labelled in pencil, For the south wall, come spring.

I have pinned it above the dresser. Tell Mum I am keeping the packet dry.
