They say a saguaro takes seventy years to grow its first arm, and you will not believe me when I tell you the one in my grandmother's yard had three by the time she was forty. She carried it home from the Sonoran nursery in a crate on the back of a borrowed truck, wrapped in newspaper, and set it down on the flat stones by the well with both hands, the way you would set down a sleeping child. Nobody in our valley had ever grown anything that wanted so little. The rain came twice a year and the wind came every day, and still that cactus stood up straight as a sermon.

My grandfather thought it foolish. He said a plant that needs nothing has nothing to give back, and he went on watering the tomatoes twice a day until the summer the well ran dry. That was the year the tomatoes gave up. The cactus did not. Grandmother cupped her palms around its base every evening and poured out the last of the washing-up water into them, a little at a time, so the ground would not splash. Her knuckles cracked open from the heat and she did it anyway.

It was not the cactus that saved the farm, whatever the newspapers wrote later. It was the habit of tending a thing that asked for almost nothing, and then finding out it had been holding everything in. When the rain finally came in the spring of the bad winter, the arms had swollen fat with it, and my grandmother stood in the yard with her hands open and wet, laughing at my grandfather for being wrong.
