Cactus and pizza slice tattoos
Dotwork · Colour · Photo
The left photograph shows a cactus with three arms, a stippled crescent moon and small star-shaped marks, all drawn in offset red and blue lines. The right photograph shows a pizza slice pierced by an arrow with a small heart at the tip, also outlined in offset red and blue with a dotted crust. Both pieces use doubled, slightly misaligned linework and no black ink is visible.

Dear Tom,

The van finally made it over the pass on Tuesday, though the oven has decided it only bakes in pairs now. Every pizza comes out with a shadow, the crust a half-inch off from the sauce, as if the whole thing were trying to be two pizzas at once. Mrs Okafor from the petrol station says it's the altitude. I say it's the printer I bought off the man in Tucson, the one who ran off those postcards in red and blue. Remember them? Every cactus had a ghost.
Anyway, the postcards. Nobody buys them, but tourists do ask. A boy in a borrowed anorak wanted the crescent moon with a sky full of stars, so I sold him two for the price of one. He left a note under the napkin dispenser saying the moon had come out wrong and he liked it better that way. I have no idea who he is. I didn't even get his name.
On Friday a lorry driver ordered a slice and asked whether I did arrows through them. I said only the ones I bend from coat hangers. He laughed, drew one on a napkin in biro, and said the little heart at the tip was the best part of his shift, cheese included.
I'm keeping the pass open till October. Come up if you can. Bring the good red ink, I've run out of blue.
Love, Jess
