Cacti and succulents in a striped pot on an upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of two cacti with pink and orange flowers, a green succulent rosette and a striped clay pot in orange, green, pink and black. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat, saturated fills and simple highlights. The design fills the frame on an upper arm, with blurred pin-up and floral flash artwork visible on the wall behind.

The pot survived the night crossing from Rotterdam, which is more than I can say for the spare fish kettle. Every morning before the breakfast rush I wedge it between the tin of tea and the bread knife, the stripes turned toward the steam so the clay stays warm. The big blue-green cactus has grown a new spine since Tuesday, and the little succulent rosette the purser gave me looks like a cabbage that has been to finishing school. Don't tell him I said so.
Thursday the swell got up at four and every cupboard door in the galley swung open as if it had been called to supper. Half the crockery went. I sat on an upturned crate with my back against the range and held the pot in my lap with both arms, the way you'd hold a child through a fever, while the pan rack rattled. Nobody is supposed to sit down in a gale, but Captain Murray was on the bridge and nobody was going to make me stand.
When the light came grey through the porthole, the pink bud on the upper cactus had split open. Four petals, the colour of a boiled sweet, pushed out in a line as though they had decided the weather was none of their business. I laughed so hard I had to hold onto the ladle.
I'm posting this with a photograph of the pot, though the post office in Harwich says a fortnight. Tell Dad the cactus is outdoing him. Love, Bea
