Cactus, crescent moon and stars on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of a tall cactus with side arms, a dotted crescent moon and four small star shapes, set on a desert-style ground line. The cactus is drawn in thin red and blue outlines with offset double lines, and the moon is shaded with fine stippling. The design fills the thigh, with navy shorts visible at the top of the frame against a plain light background.

The proofs for the desert calendar came up from the press room with every outline doubled, the blue sitting a hair to the left of the red, as if the cactus had been caught mid-step. Mr Harrow wanted them reprinted by Friday. I told him I could fix the plates in ten minutes, and then I did nothing of the sort, because I had been staring at that doubled edge all afternoon and it reminded me of my father's hands on a steering wheel, always correcting a little too late.

My father drove the Tucson road every August for twenty years, delivering seed catalogues to nurseries that were mostly dust. He used to say the saguaros kept their own time, standing about with their arms raised as if asking a question nobody had yet thought to put. On the long nights he would pull onto the shoulder near the border fence, cut the engine, and wait for the crescent moon to clear the ridge while the engine block ticked itself cool.

The reprint took me until midnight. I set the blue plate a fraction off on purpose, then the red, then ran the sheet through once more with the lamp dimmed. When it dried, the two lines lay over each other like a rumour that had got slightly wrong in the telling. Mr Harrow came in at seven, held it under the light, and went quiet for so long I thought he would ask for the bin. Instead he asked for two hundred more.

I kept one sheet for myself and folded it into the glovebox of his old van, where it still sits beside the torch and the expired road maps. The moon is a little ahead of the cactus, the stars are keeping their own time, and the ground line runs underneath it all as though the desert is still waiting for us to get the register right.
