Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework tattoo shows a tall cactus with spines and a rose with several leaves, spreading across the outer thigh. The lines are dark and even, with light grey shading in places, and the design is shown in a close, slightly angled view. The background is a checkered red, white and black floor, and a hand holding a dark skirt is visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cactus was already standing in the window of Hollis's Hardware when the dust storm came over the ridge, and that's the only reason Ada Penrose ever got her hands on the rose. She had come to town with two mules and a debt, and she had been told by everyone from the postmaster to the Methodist preacher that a woman could not run a cattle outfit alone. So she bought the cheapest thing on the shelf, a barrel cactus in a tin pot, and carried it out under her arm like a loaf of bread.

She set it on the seat of the buckboard and drove out past the stock pens, and by the time she reached the wash the spines had worked their way through her shirt sleeve and the rose she had tucked behind her ear had dropped its petals in the dust. She stopped to pick them up. The old Mexican hand who worked the far fence, Tomas, had told her once that a cactus that flowers in the heat is a cactus that has decided to stay, and she had thought that the sort of thing a man says to make a woman feel less foolish. Standing in the wash with a fistful of crushed petals and blood on her wrist, she was not so sure.

That autumn the drought broke and the cattle came down out of the hills thin but alive, and when the preacher rode out to see what the Penrose woman had done with her luck, he found her sitting on the porch steps with the cactus in her lap, its pale crown open to the sun. She didn't look up. She just said the mules were fine, the debt was paid, and he was welcome to any of the fruit he could reach without getting stuck.
