The sprig has to be cut before the bells, Mrs Okafor says, so at six you are kneeling on the potting-shed flags with secateurs in one hand and a jam jar of cold water at your knee. Strip the lower leaves, she tells you, and leave the top pair whole. The stems are slender and grey-green, and they lean upwards from a single cut base as if they have been trying to reach the light since March.

The bride, Ruth, is in the kitchen in her slippers, unable to sit still. Her grandmother pricked the hem of the wedding dress forty years ago, pressing brass pins through tracing paper, and the holes still show faintly on the old pattern taped to the dresser. Ruth wants the sprig pinned at her wrist, and she wants a ring of tiny dots drawn around it, the way her gran marked the first stitch of every hem. You take the fine pencil and go round slowly, one dot after another, until the circle closes on itself, a little wobbly where your hand shook.
By eleven the church smells of lilies and damp hymnbooks. The groom's brother arrives with a crate of spare buttonholes and asks who cut the greenery. You say you did, and he holds one up to the window and says it looks as though it grew straight out of the paper. Ruth laughs for the first time all morning. You tuck the last cutting into your own jacket, where nobody will think to look, and slip out past the vestry while the organ tries its first notes.
