Calligraphic lettering flash sheet
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A flash sheet of many separate calligraphic lettering designs arranged across a beige paper background. The words are drawn in black ink with flowing, looped strokes, fine hairlines and swirled flourishes, and some pieces have small ornamental motifs. Each design sits in its own space, so the sheet reads as a set of options rather than a single composition.

The timer has been dinging for a full minute before you hear it over the radio, and by then the flour has found the gap between your watch and your wrist. Pinned above the proving racks, the old copperplate sheet has curled at its corners from the steam. Mrs Okonedo drew most of it in the years before her hands went, and her pencil notes still crowd the margins: loop without lifting, keep the bag warm, a swirl is only honest if it costs you something. Today's order is a christening cake for a family in Walthamstow. The name goes across the top in script, with a small sun tucked into one corner.

You trace Sunshine onto baking paper first, the way she taught you. The S takes three goes. The hairlines are what undo you, because buttercream wants to slump and the flourish under the y keeps bruising into a blob. Outside, the car park turns from ink to the colour of weak tea, and the first van swings its headlights across the flour bins. Your hands are steadier than they were in March, and you tell yourself that is the reason you don't need to check the clock again.
The order card has a second line in the mother's looping biro: the grandmother is coming and she likes things done properly. Underneath, someone has drawn two hands clasped, and you decide not to pipe that part. You pipe the sun instead, eight short rays, then the long tail under the name that Mrs Okonedo always called the exhale. It comes off the bag clean on the first try. You set the cake on the cooling rack just as the shutter starts to rattle up, and you look at the sheet on the wall, at the word Peace sitting alone in its own little box, and think that is about as much as anyone asks of a Tuesday.
