Dear Tom,

The frost has held the top field since Tuesday, and the ewes are shouting for their hay before I've got the gate open. Your grandfather's old copybook came down from the loft with the Christmas decorations, so I've been practising my capitals at the kitchen table after the milking, the way he taught me in 1961 when the schoolmaster gave up on my loops.
I've enclosed the page. Look at the Q that won't close, the tail of it running under the R like a collie following a man through the stubble. He used to say a letter should be allowed one flourish it hasn't earned, just to show it has somewhere to be. The M gave me trouble. Every time I went up the first hump I came down too fast, and the ink blotted on the rise of the N the way it always did on his cuffs.
Ruth at the feed merchant's says the lad has been doing his lettering on the back of the delivery slips. She showed me one with his name on it, all swagger and curls, and she was pleased with herself for saving it. I told her to send him out on Sunday. The Wardle boys are no trouble when they're busy with a pen.
I'm sending the copybook back with you, not to keep. Start with the Z. It takes the longest to get right, and by the time you reach it the rest of the alphabet has learnt to sit up straight. Mind the ice on the step.
Love, Nan
