Script alphabet A to Z chart

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A chart of decorative script letters arranged in rows, showing both capital and lowercase forms of the alphabet with looping, swashed strokes. The linework is solid black ink with fine hairline details and no shading. The letters sit on a plain white background in a dense, evenly spaced grid.

By the time the wasps find the windfalls, the crates are stacked three high against the packing shed wall and you are still stuck on the tag for tree nine. The sheet of alphabets is pinned beside the door where your uncle left it, its corners gone soft and brown, and you have been copying the capitals onto scrap card for an hour. His Ds always leaned back like someone about to sit down. Yours lean forward, eager, which is the wrong way for a tree that has been fruiting since before your mother was born.

The trouble is the swash. Walter never let a letter finish without a flourish, a loop trailing off the baseline like a stray bramble, and the Bramley ledger is full of them. You try the Y for Yarrow Lane, then the W for Whitby Row, and the nib keeps skidding off the card. Outside, a tractor grinds up the lane and stops. Someone calls your name, and you don't answer, because the Z has finally settled on the line where it belongs.

Held up to the light, the loops look like the handwriting of a stranger, though a better stranger than most. You pin the card to the trunk with two drawing pins while the first gust off the Malvern hills shakes the leaves loose, and step back onto the path to see how it reads.

It says Walter. You meant to write Wellington, but the tail of the W swung out so far that it curled round his initial and stayed there. You leave it as it is and go back for the crate.
