Cameo portrait with roses on skin
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A woman's profile cameo sits within an ornate grey-green scrolled frame, with a fine beaded chain and blue gem and drop pendant beneath. Roses, small blue and purple flowers and leafy vines spread across the top of the design, with a close-up crop showing the shaded skin tones of the cameo and the petal detail. The linework is clean and the shading is soft, with a muted palette of pink, red, sage green and blue.

The shell came wrapped in a page torn from a ledger, a pale oval the colour of weak tea. Mr Harrow pushed it along the bench with the end of his pencil. "Carve her as she is, not as she'll be," he said, and returned to his sums before you could ask who she was.

So you worked at night, when the gas lamps along the canal gave the only light steady enough to see the layers. Pink and brown, the old carver had taught you, the blush has to come from the stone itself. You took the shell down slowly. First the brow, then the curl of hair falling behind the ear, then the petals you cut into the drapery at her throat, each one thinner than a fingernail. Twice the drill skidded and you swore at the empty workshop. Twice you stopped and listened, though there was nothing but the drip of the cooling tap.
On the fourth night a rose lay on the bench beside the shell, fresh, its stem wet, though the door had been bolted from inside. Harrow's ledger was gone from his desk. On the fifth night the lamps went out early along the whole street, and you finished her by feel, your thumb tracing a profile you had never seen full on, only glimpsed in the dark glass of the window while you worked.
At dawn you set her in a silver frame, strung the jet beads, and hung a blue stone beneath her like a drop of rain. Then you left her on the bench, face to the door, and went home to sleep through the morning.
