Carpe diem script and watercolour forearm tattoo
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of an inner forearm against a black background, showing a tattoo with black cursive script reading carpe diem running diagonally across the top. Below it, loose black strokes, triangles, dots and a helix-like shape sit over soft watercolour splashes in pink, orange and teal. The composition follows the curve of the arm, with the coloured washes fading out towards the edges.

Sit down where the shade is, under the Bramley, and mind the wasps, they're drunk on windfalls this time of year. I'll tell you about Ada Pryce, who came up this lane in the summer of the bad drought with a bag of cuttings, a tin of grafting wax and no sense at all.

She had no land of her own. The old Hallam orchard had gone to rot when the last of the brothers died, and the trees stood there like men who'd forgotten their own names. Ada went down the rows every evening with her knife, cutting wood from the trees that still had a pulse, and every morning she was out before the mist lifted, splicing them onto stock that had been left to go wild. Her hands were green with sap. The village said she was mad. Mad or not, by September the wild stock was bearing fruit with two colours on the one branch, red on the sunny side and a streaky yellow where the other tree had been bound in.
The turn came when the Hallam heir came back from town to sell. He walked the rows in a good coat, counted nothing, and asked her what she thought she was doing. Ada took him to the far end where three trunks twined round each other like the strands of a rope, and told him to pick. He bit into a Russet and his face changed. Carpe diem, she said. Seize the day, or the wood will do it for you.
He didn't sell. Most years now he picks his own apples, and that is the whole of it.
